The Durham Miners' Gala 2007
(The Big Meeting or Durham Big Meeting), held in Durham city, is a large annual gathering associated with the coal mining heritage (and particularly that of miners' trade unionism) of the Durham Coalfield, which stretched throughout the traditional County of Durham. Its highlight consists of banners, each typically accompanied by a brass band, which are marched to the old Racecourse. Political speeches have usually followed this. Any new banners are then marched up to the Cathedral for blessing by the Bishop of Durham. It takes place on the second Saturday in July.



Sustainability Funding Agreed for North East Date: 07 Nov 06
CWU North East Branch have been awarded £3,500 from the ULF sustainability fund, which seeks to assist branches in making their learning centres sustainable in the long term. An agreement was signed by Dave Mitchell (CWU North East Branch Secretary) and Paul Dovey (CWU ULF Project Manager) which confirmed the North East Branch's commitment to lifelong learning in a sustainability plan that includes a £4,500 contribution from the branch and the development of a branch ULR network able to access specialised support in areas such as e-learning and Information Advice & Guidance. Andy Sorton (Project Worker for the North East Region) is enthusiastic about the project, "John Blevins has done a marvelous job at the Northallerton Learning Centre and has put the CWU lifelong learning agenda at the heart of the community. The North East Branch has shown great commitment to learning and by signing up to the sustainability plan they have given themselves a 3-4 year window to develop the centre to full sustainability."
