Workers Memorial Day 28th April 08 "Asbestos - A modern day killer"

Well folks Mike Hayes & Peter Sharrocks represented the North East CWU at the Northern TUC memorial day at Gateshead on 28th April 08.

The event chaired by Jim Marshall focused on "Protecting Workers & Supporting Families Against Asbestos" the asbestos campaign must continue.

It was noted that around 5,000 people die each year from mesothelioma and asbestos related lung cancer - 13 people for every day of the year. Figures are increasing and prediction are that by 2010 around 10,000 people in Britain will die each year from exposure to asbestos. In perspective this is more that twice the number of road accident deaths.

Before the death rate begins to decline up to 250,000 people in Britain may have died from asbestos exposure - a chilling thought.

Over 6 million tonnes of asbestos remains in schools, hospitals, ships, offices and factories and the homes we live in. Although the importation, supply, and use of ALL asbestos throughout Britain is now prohibited, the Government are now providing funds for the modernisation and/or building of new schools. Let's hope we protect the youth of today through stringent controls against exposure to asbesto's or hazards of any kind.
